LOCATION: Virginia Beach

Tyler’s road in Combat Sports began in 2002 when he wrestled under All-American Mike Mercado until he found the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2007. From there Tyler studied under Jonathan Wertz religiously, often following his instructors to high-level tournaments or championship Mixed Martial Arts bouts as well as helping them teach class. Tyler was the test subject for many late-night technique sessions with Jon and Dan, explaining his bad back and low self-esteem.

Observing the growth of BJJ on a national scale, Tyler moved to New York City to train at the prestigious Marcelo Garcia Jiu-Jitsu Academy. While training Tyler gleaned details on high-level technique, both as a student and as an aspiring Black Belt Instructor. He sat in on classes taught by 5x World and 4x ADCC Champion Marcelo Garcia and sparred with some of the top names in Submission Grappling today.

Since his return to Virginia Beach, Tyler took a strong charge with instruction of both Kids and Adult classes at both academies. Now Head Instructor of the Virginia Beach Academy, Tyler prides himself on his ability to convey the truths of BJJ to a wide audience. He specializes in lower body attacks, Competition Training, Kids instruction and no-gi Jiu-Jitsu.

In Tyler’s eyes the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu isn’t limited to the brutish male with seasoned ears or an intense air. Jiu-Jitsu is a way of life that can be applied to all things. Whether it’s a young child that wants an outlet after school or a teen that needs help with self-confidence or discipline, Tyler holds it true to his heart that there is a path for everyone in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His children’s competitors have made waves in the Jiu-Jitsu community and his Adults have found their way to the Medal Stand at every tournament they’ve entered.
